White Mountain Systems was founded by Dr. Pujitha (Puji) Weerakoon, an expert in engineering, neuroscience, and medical device innovation.

Dr. Weerakoon earned his doctorate in Engineering and Applied Science from Yale, where he successfully designed, fabricated, and tested the first microchip implementation of a multi-channel, patch-clamp amplifier system for measuring ion-channel currents, a critical data point in electrophysiology for understanding neuronal and cellular activity.

From 2010 to 2021, he worked at Boston Scientific, where he designed microchips, neural amplifiers, and stimulators for sensing and stimulation in implantable deep brain stimulators and spinal cord stimulators. As the Head of Research and Development at iota Biosciences from 2021 to 2025, Dr. Weerakoon led the expansion of the R&D and Engineering team from 10 to nearly 100 employees, driving the development of Class-3 implantable medical devices.

His work encompassed multiple disciplines, including hardware, software, machine learning, AI, and specialized custom designs such as microchip (ASIC) design and custom micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). A key milestone under his leadership was securing FDA Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) approval for iota’s First-In-Human Early Feasibility Study of the Implantable Bladder Device in October 2024.

With over 20 years of experience in research and development, engineering, strategic innovation, and product management across both startups and large corporations, Dr. Weerakoon has extensive hands-on expertise in designing neural amplifiers and electrophysiology equipment. He holds more than 20 issued patents across multiple patent families (Google Scholar). Additionally, he completed the Chief Technology Officer Program and executive courses in Technology Development and Driving Strategic Innovation at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
